Description
This early 20th century piece of folk art or mingei Hakata sculpture is a low fired ceramic bisque finish doll of a Japanese rice merchant*. Seated cross-legged on the floor (probably a tatami mat) holding a sample of rice in his hands and evaluating the quality to price it.
Beneath the layers of patina is a tightly wrapped business-look rice merchant, dressed in a man's Kimono coat, Obi and an outer robe.
His left hand, extended out, palm turned upwards holds grains of rice. Using his fire finger of the right hand, he is testing the rice for appraisal.
Wonderful expressive facial features. The realistic features and crisp detail of painting reflect the skill and artistry of the craftsman. Details on the clothing, hair styling details.
Height 10.5”. Length 7”. Width 8”

A hundred years ago, a man named Munehisa Homma created a technique called Heikin Ashi. This man is a
rice merchant
in Sakata,
Japan.
Even though he is a
rice merchant,
the world also knew him as the father of the
candlestick
chart. Heikin Ashi is a
Japanese
term where Heikin means average and Ashi means pace.
